The
Faculty of Arts was established in the academic year 1991/1992 and was affiliated
with Sana'a University. Back then, one hundred and eighty-seven male and female
students were admitted, distributed between two departments, the Department of Arabic
Language and the Department of English Language. In the academic year 92/93,
the Department of Sociology was created and 152 male and female students were admitted
in this department. In the academic year 94/95, two new departments were created:
the Department of Islamic Studies in which 147 male and female students were
admitted, and the Department of French which admitted 50 male and female
students.
After
the announcement of the establishment of Taiz University in 1995, two new
departments were created in the Faculty of Arts: the Department of Geography in
which 116 male and female students were admitted, and the Department of History
that admitted 141 male and female students. In the academic year 95/96, the
number of students enrolled in the faculty in all its departments reached 2420
male and female students. The number of students applying for the academic year
99/2000 was 3626 male and female students and the number of students in the faculty
in the academic year 2002/2003 became 4097 male and female students. The
Department of Psychology was created in 2003/2004 and 70 male and female
students were admitted in it.
