About
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is one of the Faculties of Taiz University. Work to establish this faculty began on February 29th, 1998 and took its official form on March 21st, 1998, when the University Rector’s Decree No. (36) of 1998 was issued to form a committee to study the project of establishing the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Taiz University. The committee consisted of the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, the Dean of Faculty of Science, the Director General of the Public Health and Population Office in the governorate, members of the Administrative Board of the Yemeni Doctors and Pharmacists Syndicate, Taiz Branch, some specialist doctors, and the participation of some dignitaries of the governorate.
The committee studied the possibility and feasibility of establishing a Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences in Taiz Governorate. Dr. Hussein Al-Jazaery, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, and the organization’s representative in Sana’a participated in one of the committee’s meetings. Members of the committee also visited medical faculties in other Yemeni universities, some Arab universities, Canada, and the United Kingdom to review the latest curricula for medical education. The committee, in cooperation with the World Health Organization, supervised a workshop on 6/9/1998 to explore studying systems and choose the most appropriate curriculum to be the educational system for the Faculty. The World Health Organization, all Yemeni government universities, the Amin Nasher Higher Institute for Health Sciences, and specialist doctors from inside and outside Taiz Governorate participated in that workshop. After the committee completed its study, it submitted its recommendations to the Rector of Taiz University and the University Council.
